UNTIL THEN, FIGHT'S ON...

I recently returned from a whirlwind trip to Washington, D.C.

From the moment I stepped off the plane in D.C.,
there was an amazing powerful atmosphere of being among decision makers that shape our world.

Everyone in D.C., has

an agenda, my agenda is fighting for research dollars and awareness that childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer of American children...

Since Carson's death, January 12, 2010, these past 3 years have been extremely successful and healing to my aching heart by being part of the Creating Hope (written by my friend Nancy Goodman who's son died from the same disgusting cancer as our Carson).

This bipartisian act was championed by the MOST amazing Congressman on The Hill, Congressman Michael McCaul!

I had the privilege of sharing Carson's story in Congressman Michael McCaul's home when he kicked off his childhood cancer caucus just 8 months after Carsonie died...
and now it is an official BILL...

I was telling hubby-Craig last weekend, that very often I think...

what the heck just happened??

We had this family with 2 strong-healthy boys and we were clipping along, doing life...

Then one day my greatest fear came true...

Our boy gets sick with life stealing-disgusting cancer, he fights valiantly for life,

But slowly dies before our eyes while we searched the world for a cure that is yet to be discovered...

My heart tells me to fight for the next kid & we promised Carson that we would...

And, I went from being a 1st grade teacher to an absolutely possessed childhood-cancer-fighting-broken-hearted momma bear...

FIGHT'S ON...
RAISING FUNDS SO A BRILLIANT SCIENTIST CAN FIGURE OUT CURE...
SOMEDAY SOON...

UNTIL THEN...

childhood cancer is part of me...

childhood cancer is part of me…

Last week I over heard someone saying, that’s the lady whose son died of cancer…then, they both kindly walked over and we talked…

Childhood cancer will always be part of who I am…

I’ve been blue lately.
And I know it’s because of the company I have been keeping!
That company comes with a burden.
But it’s worth it because children are worth it!

Here’s the skinny on some of my company:

·      Tuesday, a young boy died from medulloblastoma, same disease as our Carson.  Sure bet Carson is showing him the ropes of heaven…
·      Last week a young boy was transferred to hospice care, his young life cut short and death is imminent…
·      Two weeks ago a young boy’s leg was amputated because of a large, invasive, disgusting tumor.  He faces a lifetime of trials.

In the mist of feeling the burden of these children’s journeys, I received a letter from Congressman McCaul’s office confirming that the childhood cancer research work that I have had the privilege of being part of in Washington, D.C. is coming to fruition and making GREAT progress!

This helps my “blueness” because fighting the thief who stole my boy is very healing to me!

Here’s a bit of the letter from Congressman McCaul's office:

“I am extremely grateful to Annette Leslie for her tremendous passion and hard work on behalf of children with cancer.  For the past two years she has played an instrumental role in building support for the Creating Hope Act, which was unanimously approved in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and will provide incentives for the development of new drugs to treat children with rare diseases, such as pediatric cancer.  Since the 1980s, only one new childhood cancer drug has been approved by the FDA to treat pediatric cancer, which is the leading disease killer of our nation’s children. Annette’s advocacy has been essential in the fight for new treatments. Annette has been an extraordinary advocate and leader! The Creating Hope Act passed yesterday evening in the House!”

children are worth fighting for…
It’s a HONOR to carry part of their burden and to fight their fight…

Luke

Luke was a boy in my 1st grade class, many-many moons ago…
Back in the day when cancer had not invaded our boy’s bodies…
Now Carey (Luke's mom) and I have a forever friendship, cancer-mom-sister-friend,
2 momma bears with broken hearts whose boys are warriors…

Luke’s story fuels my heart to keep on fighting for “the next kid”…
1 in ever 330 kids will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21…
FIGHT ‘S ON FOR A DADGUM CURE…

CPRIT & CLF are teaming up!

Texas voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment in 2007 establishing the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) authorizing the state to issue $3 billion in bonds to fund groundbreaking cancer research and prevention programs in Texas.

The Carson Leslie Foundation (CLF) was established in 2010 to honor one of Carson’s last wishes. Annette Leslie, (Carson’s mom) was invited to serve on CPRIT’s Advisory Committee on Childhood Cancer soon after CLF was established.

Craig, Annette (with photo of Carson) and bro Craig!
It became apparent that CPRIT and CLF sympathies line up in regards to the necessity of pediatric cancer research.  So, CPRIT and CLF have established a partnership, The Carson Leslie Research Grants for Pediatric Brain Cancer Research.  Both CPRIT and CLF are committed to maintaining extremely high standards in choosing the recipient(s) of the grants and both consider it a unique opportunity to help stimulate great scientific thinking within childhood brain tumor research.

Applications may be basic, translational, or clinical in their orientation, but they must be clearly relevant to brain cancer in children and/or adolescents. One of Carson's last wishes was to donate his brain for research into the causes and treatment of pediatric brain cancer. In keeping with his wish, fixed tissue, DNA, and cell lines are available from Carson's tumors. Applications that would benefit scientifically from the use of this material may request access, with justification.

CLF will provide seed money and CPRIT is prepared to fully fund as many pediatric brain cancer research grant proposals that CPRIT's scientific review committee deems A+.  Grants may be funded for 3 years with up to $500,000 each year.  Theoretically each grant could receive $1.5 million.

The Carson Leslie Foundation is especially excited about this collaboration with CPRIT for several reasons: (1) CLF’s funds will be tremendously leveraged, (2) we are keeping our promise to our boy, but mostly because (3) disgusting cancer is the #1 disease killer of children.

And just maybe hidden among those tumors that invaded Carson’s brain are some answers that a brilliant scientist needs to find a cure from pediatric brain cancer.

fight's on...

Two years ago tomorrow, our feisty boy with a wonderful deep soul died from a disgusting and ugly cancerous tumor that invaded his brain…

Some days it feels like Carson has been dead for10 years and some days I think, he is going to walk through the door any minute…

But the truth is, we searched the world for a cure that is yet to be discovered and Carson died young and fearless insisting his brain be studied with the hope of helping the next kid whose vibrant growing body is invaded by disgusting cancer…

We promised him we would honor his request and so, the search continues…

The Carson Leslie Foundation has raised several hundred thousand dollars for research PLUS our annual, “A Sunny Place for Shady People” event is this Friday, January 13! We have already exceeded our goals!  More people have registered than we ever expected and underwriting has blown us away!

PLUS, this week we have made significant progress figuring out the A+ study of Carson’s brain.  And, we have figured out how to incentivize the dollars we raise!  (Much more on that later!!)

Below is a correspondence I had a few months ago:
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To refresh your memory, I am Annette Leslie the mother of Carson Leslie who died from complications of medulloblastoma on January 12, 2010.

It was because of his insistence you received some of the medullo tumors that invaded his brilliant brain on January 13, 2010. You were kind enough to communicate with me early on in your study.  Well as time has gone on and I continue work at healing from the death of my son, I have found that it is through FIGHTING back, for the next kid who is diagnosed with disgusting cancer helps me to heal the most.

As a result of the fight, I have the privilege of serving on the CPRIT pediatric cancer advisory committee.  Recently I attended a CPRIT conference in Austin. At that conference I was sitting in Dr. Parson's presentation of whole exome sequencing & other methods of genomic analysis to GBM, which included medulloblastoma.  As I listened trying to understand what Dr. Parson’s was talking about, your name popped up. And I remembered it was you who did the study on the tumors in Carson's brain right after he died. Then I almost fell out of my chair thinking the study they are talking about might be those tumors from my boy.

I would like to confirm and I anxiously wait to hear from you...and thank you for your careful work...annette

Dear Annette,
Thank you so much for your continued support of pediatric brain tumor research, and I am so happy to know that you are serving on the CPRIT pediatric advisory committee. By working together, we will bring medulloblastoma under control.

And, yes, I am collaborating with Dr. Parson on multiple projects. We have applied and been awarded several research grants together. I believe you have known that Dr. Parson has made several seminal discoveries on GBM as well as on medulloblastoma. Most of the data that Dr. Parson published so far (in Nature and Science) was generated from his study in John Hopkins.  We are, however, rapidly moving to the next (and I believe more important) phase of studies.  1) to validate his previous findings in more tumors, 2) to conduct functional confirmation of the important genes, and 3) to test new drugs targeting the candidate genes.  I can assure you that the tumor and the normal tissue from Carson are extremely important for all these studies. This is because most of the other tumors we have collected do not have matched normal tissue to compare.

One more thing that I wish to share with you is that we have identified a set of genes that may play critical roles in medulloblastoma invasion and metastasis. We are using the tumor tissues from Carson to confirm our findings, and our long-term goal is to develop new therapies that will block this deadly process.

Best regards,

Xiao-Nan
THIS FUELS US…there was not an ounce of surrender in our boy…fight’s on…
